Minimizing Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Political Trauma Stress for Socially Conscious Helping Professionals: Sustainable Wellness & Self-Care
Helping others through their stress, pain, trauma and suffering is central to much of the work that we helping professionals provide. This makes burnout, vicarious trauma, compassion and empathy fatigue all too common "occupational hazards". Additionally, as socially conscious helpers, doing this challenging work, while also existing within these current social-political realities, further increases our propensity for oppression fatigue.
It is imperative that we white "progressive" and "liberal" helping professionals move beyond difficult conversations and into meaningful systematic action. What does actively working for Racial Justice mean in our professional and personal lives? ~ Identify common race dynamic questions, worries, and issues that we may have, situations we have come across, and the mistakes that we white helpers often make when helping People of Color.
~We will discuss the topics of White Privilege, White Feminism, White Liberalism, White Fragility, Cultural Appropriation, White Savior Complex, Intersectionality, Reparations - and how these concepts influence ourselves, our work as helping professionals, and how we will address them.
